iPad Mini 7 - Is That It?

The new iPad Mini 7 has finally dropped, and if you’re feeling a little underwhelmed… well, you’re not alone. After all the anticipation, it’s hard not to ask, is that it? And with such a modest update, it’s only natural to wonder: is the iPad Mini heading towards the fate of the iPhone Mini? Could Apple be on the verge of canceling one of its most beloved (but niche) products?

Let’s dive into what’s new, what’s missing, and whether the iPad Mini 7 is worth your attention.

What Did Apple Actually Change?

On paper, the iPad Mini 7’s upgrades sound decent:

  • A17 Pro Chip – a strong boost from the previous A15 chip.
  • Apple Pencil Pro Support
  • Increased Base Storage to 128GB
  • WiFi 6E support
  • Double the RAM
  • Faster USB-C Port

Sounds impressive, right? But when it comes down to it, these updates feel like the bare minimum—much like the recent AirPods Max refresh. It’s hard not to think that the Mini is being kept on life support with just enough enhancements to remain "current-gen."

What’s Next for the iPad Mini?

So, what’s Apple’s plan? Will the iPad Mini stick around, or is it at risk of becoming a relic? Here’s what I see happening:

  1. Bare-Minimum Upgrades – This pattern of modest updates might continue for a while, keeping the Mini just relevant enough.
  2. Total Redesign – Many of us are hoping for a major overhaul, but Apple seems hesitant to take this step.
  3. The End of the Mini? – Let’s face it, single-digit sales figures don’t bode well for any Apple product. The Mini could face the same fate as the iPhone Mini: appreciated but under-bought.

According to some internet sleuthing, the iPad Mini only accounts for about 7% of total iPad sales. That’s… not great. We saw a similar trend with the iPhone Mini, which had a loyal fanbase but ultimately didn’t generate enough sales to stick around.

Why We Need the iPad Mini

Here’s the thing: the iPad Mini is, arguably, the only iPad that makes sense as an iPad. It’s not trying to replace a laptop, nor does it require the pricey accessories that turn the larger models into hybrid laptops. It’s portable, it’s versatile, and it’s perfect for:

  • Travel – Small enough to carry, big enough for movies, shows, and reading.
  • Note-Taking – Its compact size is similar to a notepad, ideal for jotting down quick notes.
  • Content Consumption – Perfect for browsing, reading, and watching videos.
  • Portability – Easy to carry around, unlike larger models that feel cumbersome.

If they made the Mini waterproof, it’d even be ideal for reading by the pool or at the beach. Bigger iPads are great, but they’re not as convenient to hold and use in the same way the Mini is.

My Ideal iPad Mini: The Dream Wishlist

So, what would make the iPad Mini an instant buy for me? Here’s what I’d love to see:

  • Brighter OLED Display – With thinner bezels for a modern look.
  • 120Hz ProMotion – Because 60Hz just doesn’t cut it anymore.
  • FaceID – No more fumbling with buttons.
  • Fewer Cameras – Just a high-quality front-facing camera is enough.
  • IP68 Waterproofing – For real durability on the go.
  • Affordable Price Tag – Not in MacBook territory!

If Apple did all this, it would be the ultimate iPad Mini—a device that could satisfy Apple fans and iPad enthusiasts alike.

Will Apple Deliver?

Looking at the latest rumours, a Mini with OLED could be possible… in 2026, but it’s still far off. Whether it’s an 8.7-inch model, a Mini Pro, or even a foldable, it’s hard to say. And until then, we’re left with the iPad Mini 7—a decent update, but far from revolutionary.

Are you planning to buy the iPad Mini 7? Or are you waiting for something with more of a wow factor? Let me know in the comments—what would make the Mini an instant buy for you? And if you want to know why I believe the iPad Mini is one of the best iPads Apple has ever made, check out my next post.

Let’s hope Apple’s listening.
